In the third industry shake-up since the beginning of the year, Training Magazine and its Web presence will go dark once the March edition of the magazine is published, ending a 41-year run as one of the prominent periodicals of the training industry. Neilsen Business Media, owner and publisher of Training Magazine, informed employees Tuesday of the decision to shut down. The decision includes eliminating all 11 positions associated with the brand.
“Training Magazine has made a huge contribution to our industry over the years”, said David Holcombe, president & CEO of The eLearning Guild and publisher of Learning Solutions Magazine. “I’ve been a reader, partner, and sometimes even a competitor of Training Magazine for more than 25 years — having known its leaders including founder Jim Seacord of Lakewood Publications, Jerry Noack while it was owned by Bill Communications, and Phil Jones while it was owned by VNU Business Media — I can assure you that every one of them was committed to producing a high-quality product for this industry. It’s sad to see the demise of this publication now, as our industry is revving up for an exciting new era in learning that’s enabled by so many amazing new technologies.”
Neilsen Co. recently sold several of their publications, including Billboard, The Hollywood Reporter, Commercial Property Executive, and Multi-Housing News, to other media concerns. BtoB Magazine reported today that Neilsen Co. is exiting the trade publishing business. So far, attempts to verify this report and to learn the fate of the Neilsen Business Media division of the company have been unsuccessful.
Training currently has a subscriber base of approximately 45,000. Neilsen also produces a number of industry events, including an annual industry conference and expo and an on-going set of live and online professional development events. No official information has been announced regarding other Training Magazine-related media assets, such as the TrainingMagNetwork.com or the Training Leadership Summit that is scheduled for May.
