How to Build Branching Scenario Simulations

For many soft skills (customer service, sales, and so on), game-like branching simulations are an ideal teaching method. These are simple to create. Here are five steps that will take you through the entire process!

With a template that is included in ProForm Rapid eLearning Studio and Unison Collaborative Course Authoring, you can build branching soft skill simulations that play like a game. The simulations you build can have multiple outcomes.

The learner is presented a problem and must choose a response. The learner's responses determine the path through the scenario.

First add a page in Unison. Select “Other” and click on the Soft Skill Sim page. (See Figure 1.) Once you have added one of these pages, simply follow the step-by-step instructions to build your page.

Follow each step listed in the rest of this article, making sure you fill out the content completely and accurately.

Step One: Give the page a name

This will be the name for your scenario and it must be unique. (See Figure 2.)

Step Two: Enter the scenario.

This is where you identify and describe the situation.

For example, if you want to present to the learner how to deal with an upset customer, you would type in a scenario of a customer coming in and getting upset. (See Figure 3.) You need to leave the customer with a choice at the end of the scenario, so keep that in mind when you’re filling out the scenario. You can link images, audio files, and even video to this scenario. So be creative!

Step Three: Set up the branches.

Enter the choices your learners have to indicate how they would react to the scenario. Then tell Unison what page each choice will take the learner to when selected. This can be to any other page type, or to another soft-skills page that would give them more choices. Depending on their answer, you will take the learner to another page where they will receive immediate feedback on the answer they chose. You may also add an audio link if desired, and you can assign point values to each choice. (See Figure 4.)

Step 4: Enter the settings for the scenario.

You can decide whether this is a starting page or ending page, as well as give the progress bar a name and point value. (See Figure 5.)

Step 5: Preview the course and try it out!

You will be able to see what the learner will see, and, depending on the choices you make to the scenario, the corresponding feedback. (See Figure 6.)
