Data Point: How does your budget compare?

Is your budget keeping up? Here’s what your colleagues reported over the last two years.

E-Learning Guild member managers report the average budget grew by 13.7% from 2009 to 2010. The current year average budget was $1.170M, compared to $1.029M for the previous year.

Figure 1 shows a breakdown of average budget by industry from 2008 – 2010. For this two-year period, the overall average budget was $1.124M. When evaluated by industry there is a wide range of spending, with the Telecommunications industry spending 62% more than Non-profit/Trade Associations.

Look at your industry and learn how your organization compares to both the industry average and the overall average. Managers, as you enter into your next budget cycle, consider the growth rate trend this past year of 13.7%.

Note: This data includes budget sizes ranging from $50K to $10M. We grouped industries with less than 50 respondents to the survey into “Other Industries – Above Average Budget” or “Other Industries – Below Average Budget”. Other Industries – Above Average Budget includes: Energy/Utilities, Real Estate, Retail/Wholesale/Distribution (Computer and Non-computer), and Travel/Hospitality. Other Industries – Below Average Budget includes: Aerospace/Defense, Agriculture/Mining, Automotive/Transportation, Construction/Architecture/Engineering, and Legal. The data N = 2,453 from worldwide e-Learning Guild member managers reporting from 8/27/2008 to 8/27/2010.
