Paula Jones, ABD, is an Instructional Designer in the Instructional Development Center in the Continuing Education and Outreach program at Eastern Kentucky University. Ms. Jones has designed numerous online courses. In addition, she is active in several professional organizations, and she has published in a variety of journals and textbooks. She has also presented at several national conferences and online forums including Sloan-C, The eLearning Guild, AECT, and E-Learn World (AACE) Conferences. She is currently ABD in her doctoral program in Instructional Systems Design at the University of Kentucky. Her research interests focus on student and faculty perspectives in teaching and learning online, and ways of utilizing instructional technology to offer more effective communication and instructional opportunities to learners.

Whatever helps learners connect with the content and each other is paramount, and the main way this happens in many courses is through an instructor. This article brings research to support this observation, and suggests that an introductory video could be essential to helping learners and their online instructor connect.
